First Concussion Substitute in Test Cricket History


Marnus Labuschagne became the first concussion substitute in Test Cricket on Sunday 18th August 2019 after Steve Smith was ruled out from the remainder of the 2nd Ashes Test match in Lord's. On day 4 of the 2nd Test, Steve Smith was injured by a blow on his neck from a bouncer bowled by Jofra Archer on Saturday. Smith was forced to retire who was batting on 80 runs. However, he cleared the concussion test and returned to the crease but couldn't score and got out on 92 runs.

  The next morning Smith woke up with headache and grogginess. Another concussion test conducted before the play starts on the 5th day as per CA protocol, which demonstrated some deterioration from his testing which is consistent with the emergence of the symptoms he was reporting.





    On the basis of which the team doctor Richard Saw withdrawn Smith from the match. And Australian team lodged an application for like substitute with the ICC match referee in line with the ICC protocol to replace Steven Smith with Marnus Labuschagne.

         Marnus Labuschagne is a 25 years old cricketer and made his Test debut last year in Dubai in a 5 match series against Pakistan. In 142 years of Cricket Labuschagne became the first cricketer to bat in a match without being in the playing XI.

Labuschagne may be the part of playing 11 in the 3rd match as he played a crucial Inning of 59 runs of 100 balls to save Australia from the losing the 2nd match of Ashes.
