The Melbourne Cricket Club (MCC) has announced that they have recommended the name of former Sri Lankan captain Kumar Sangakkara for a second term as the chairman due to disruption from Covid-19. Sangakkara, the former wicketkeeper-batsman, who became the club's first non-British president on October 2019.






The club said in a statement, "Due to the disruption in world cricket due to the outbreak of Kovid-19. The committee recommends that Sangakkara, who took office on 1 October 2019, be invited to continue as the president of the club till 30 September 2021."

Recommendation of Sangakkara as Chairman






A recommendation to extend the tenure of Sangakkara will be sent to the club members at the annual meeting of the General Assembly to be held on 24 June for approval. The club also said that this is not the first time that the chairman will hold the post for more than a year.






"The members of the MCC are generally for a tenure of 12 months. Long tenures are not unprecedented during exceptional circumstances" said in the statement. Lord Hawke (1914–18) and Stanley Kristofferson (1939–45) served as president for more than a year during the two world wars. International and domestic cricket worldwide has either been canceled or postponed due to the outbreak of the Coronavirus epidemic.

Sangakkara the former Sri Lankan left-handed wicketkeeper-batsman who scored 28016 runs in the span of 15 years. He won the Man of the Match award in the final of the 2014 ICC World Twenty20 and helped the team win their first title.  At retirement, he was the second-highest run-scorer in ODI cricket and sixth-highest run-scorer in Test cricket. He was the youngest person and the first active international player to deliver the MCC Spirit of Cricket Cowdrey Lecture. And was widely praised by the cricketing community for its outspoken nature.
