Investigation on World Cup 2011 final fixing allegation

Former Sri Lankan Sports Minister Mahindananda Aluthgamage claimed that Sri Lanka had sold the final of the World Cup 2011 to give India victory. The Sri Lankan government has ordered a criminal investigation into the allegations in this case. Speaking to AFP news agency, KDS Ruvachandra, secretary of the Sports Ministry, has said, "Criminal investigation has begun."

The issue was mooted earlier this month when Aluthgamge (who was Sri Lanka's Sports Minister at the time) said in an interview with a local TV channel that the 2011 World Cup final between India and Sri Lanka had been fixed. Aluthgamge had said, "Today I am telling you that we sold the 2011 World Cup, I said this when I was the Sports Minister."

The news agency AFP, citing local reports from Sri Lanka, had also claimed that former Sri Lankan captain Arvinda DeSilva (who was the team's chief selector for the 2011 final) was called for an interview with investigators on Tuesday.

In a recent Sunday Times column, DeSilva denied the allegations and urged SLC, BCCI and the ICC to investigate the matter to clear up any doubts on the subject. He wrote in his column, "We cannot let people away with lies all the time. I request everyone, the ICC, BCCI and SLC to investigate it immediately."

Sri Lanka captain Kumar Sangakkara chose to bat after winning the toss in the 2011 World Cup final. Mahela Jayawardene scored a brilliant century and India were asked to chase a target of 275 runs. Gautam Gambhir (97) and then captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni (91) helped India reach the target with 6 wickets to win the trophy. India won the World Cup for the second time after 1983.
