  1. Sunil Gavaskar made his Test debut against the West Indies in 1971 and scored 774 runs in his first series. This debut is still the world record for the most runs in a Test series. Gavaskar is also the highest Test run-scorer in a series against the West Indies with 774 runs.
  2. Sunil Gavaskar was the first cricketer in the world to complete 9000 and 10000 runs in Test cricket. When Gavaskar retired, his name was 10122 runs which was then the world record for most Test runs. It was later broken by Alan Border (11174) of Australia. Including the border, a total of 11 batsmen have now scored more runs than Gavaskar in Test cricket, with the world record being Sachin Tendulkar (15921) of India.




  1. Australia's Don Bradman's world record of 29 Test centuries was broken by Sunil Gavaskar. Gavaskar retired in 1987 with a world record of 34 centuries. Later in 2005, his record was broken by Sachin Tendulkar (51), whose name still holds the world record for most Test centuries. Well now a total of five batsmen have scored more Test centuries than Gavaskar.

  1. Gavaskar's name is also the test record for the most runs and centuries against the West Indies. Gavaskar has scored 2749 runs against the West Indies and has scored 13 centuries.
  2. Gavaskar was the first batsman in the world to score a century in both innings three times in Test cricket. His world record was later equaled by Australia's Ricky Ponting and David Warner.
  3. Gavaskar was India's first fielder to catch 100 catches in Test cricket.




  1. Gavaskar was India's first opener to remain unbeaten till the end of the innings in Test cricket. He achieved this feat by scoring an unbeaten 127 against Pakistan in the Faisalabad Test in 1983.
  2. In 1980, Wisden named Gavaskar among the best cricketers of the year. In the same year, he was awarded the Padma Bhushan.
  3. Gavaskar was the first cricketer in the world to play 100 consecutive Test matches.
  4. Gavaskar holds the joint Indian record for the most centuries in first-class cricket with Sachin Tendulkar. Both have scored 81 centuries in first-class cricket.
  5. Gavaskar's maternal uncle Madhav Minister (four Tests), brother-in-law Gundappa Vishwanath (91 Tests and 25 ODIs) and son Rohan Gavaskar (11 ODIs) have also played international cricket for India.
