New Delhi Sunil Gavaskar has several records to his name. He is the first batsman to score 10,000 runs in Tests, while the record of making the most runs (774) in the debut test series is also in his name. Apart from all these records, he had created a record which is not untrue till date. He was the only batsman in the world to score a double century in all four innings of Test cricket. Sir Don Bradman had scored 12 double centuries in Test cricket, but he was not able to achieve this feat.

Gaskar had scored only 4 double centuries in his Test career, but all these double centuries he scored in different innings of Test cricket. He made his first double century (220 runs) in his debut Test series in the third innings of the match against West Indies in 1971 in Port of Spain. The veteran opener then went on to score 205 in the first innings of the match against the West Indies in Mumbai in 1978, and a year later scored a 221-run marathon in the fourth innings of the match at the Oval against England.





Gavaskar scored his last double century (236 not out) in the second innings of the match against the West Indies in Chennai in 1985. Bradman is one of the six batsmen to score double centuries in three innings of the match. The Australian veteran hit all his 12 double centuries in the first three innings but his highest score was 173 not out in the fourth innings of the match.

Kumar Sangakkara of Sri Lanka had reached the closest to match Gavaskar's record, scoring all 11 double centuries in his career in the first three innings. He reached close to scoring a double century in the fourth innings against Australia in Hobart in 2007 but when he was playing for 192 he had to return to the pavilion due to the umpire's poor decision.





The other batsmen to score double centuries in three innings of Test cricket include Younis Khan, Alastair Cook, Brandon McCullum, and Gordon Greenidge. Most of the batsmen who have scored four or more double centuries in their career have done this in the first and second innings of the match.

These include Volley Hammond, Sachin Tendulkar, Brian Lara, Rahul Dravid, Virender Sehwag, Virat Kohli, Ricky Ponting, Mahela Jayawardene, and Marvan Atapattu. Mohammad Yusuf had all four of his double centuries in the second innings of the match.
