The start was slow as they scored only 7 runs in 4 overs and lost the wicket of Shane Watson who couldn't score a single sun after playing 9 balls and departed on a duck. Then a partnership between du Plessis and Raina took the score to 27-1 in the powerplay and scored 83 runs in 10.1 overs but Axar Patel breaks the partnership by departing du Plessis on 39 runs (2 fours, 2 sixes) of 41 balls. After the wicket, Raina completed his 37th fifty in VIVO IPL and then tried to score quick runs but J Suchith sen him back to the pavilion on 59 runs (8 fours, 1 six) of 37 balls. Ravindra Jadeja came in to bat with MS Dhoni and scored quick 25 runs (2 fours, 2 sixes) of 10 balls and got out in the 19 over. Dhoni once again helped the team to set a total of 179-4 by finishing off the inning by hitting 2 huge sixes in the last 2 balls and scored 44 runs (4 fours, 3 sixes) of 22 balls.
The bowlers started well but at the end conceded runs with a good run rate where J Suchith picked 2 wickets, Axar Patel and Chris Moris got 1 wicket each.

The start was not so good for DC as they lost the wickets of both the openers in the powerplay where Prithvi Shaw departed in the 5 balls of the inning on 4 runs by Deepak Chahar and Sikhar Dhawan got out to Harbhajan Singh after scoring 19 runs (1 four, 1 six) of 13 balls. And then Imran Tahir and Ravindra Jadeja picked wickets continuously at one one end whereas on the other end Shreyas Iyer tried to score runs and get closer to the target but no other batsman supported as no batsman other than Sikhar and Shreyas Iyer could score 2 digit runs ultimately Iyer got out after scoring 44 runs (4 fours, 1 six) of 31 balls as a result of which the team DC was wrapped up on 99-10 in 16.2 overs.
Imran Tahir once was brilliant with the bowl and picked 4 wickets in 3.2 overs by conceding only 12 runs and Ravindra Jadeja got 3 wickets and conceded just 9 runs in 3 overs, Deepak Chahar and Harbhajan Singh got 1 wicket each which helped CSK to win the match by 80 runs.
MS Dhoni was the Player of the Match award for his game-changing inning in the 50th Match of VIVO IPL Season 12, CSK vs DC in Chennai.
