Former Sri Lankan Sports Minister overturned by his claim on World Cup 2011

Colombo: The former Sri Lankan Sports Minister, Mahindananda Aluthgamage, who claimed to have fixed the World Cup 2011 final, has now termed his claim as 'doubt' which he wants to investigate. The Sri Lankan government has ordered an inquiry into the matter and the special investigation unit of the police recorded the statement of Aluthgamge on Wednesday. He told the police team that he only suspected fixing.

Aluthgamge told reporters, "I just want my suspicions investigated". He said, "I have given a copy of the complaint to the police which I, as the then Sports Minister, referred to the allegations on 30 October 2011. The International Cricket Council (ICC) was lodged. 'Aluthgamge alleged that the match in his country was' sold' to India. Calling his claim, former captains Kumar Sangakkara and Mahela Jayawardene demanded rubbish from them.

Chasing a target of 275 runs, India registered a victory thanks to the innings of Gautam Gambhir (97) and the then captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni (91). Aluthgamge, who was the country's Sports Minister at the time, had said, "Today I am telling you that we had sold the 2011 World Cup, I said this when I was the Sports Minister."

At that time, Sri Lankan captain Sangakkara had asked to provide evidence for an anti-corruption investigation. Sangakkara tweeted, "They need to take their 'evidence' to the ICC and the Anti-Corruption and Security Unit for a detailed investigation into the claim."

Former captain Jayawardene, who scored a century in that match, however, called these allegations rubbish. He asked in the tweet, "Are elections going to happen? …. liked the circus that started … name and proof?"

Aluthgamge said that his view is that some players, rather than the players, were involved in fixing the result. Aluthgamge and then President Mahinda Rajapaksa was invited to the finals held at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai. After these allegations, former Sri Lankan veteran player and then chairman of the selection committee, Arvind DeSilva, has requested the BCCI to conduct its investigation. DeSilva has said that he is willing to go to India despite the threat of coronavirus to be involved in such investigations.
