Bowlers taking 5 wickets in ODIs for the first time

Actually, Kapil Dev had done 37 years ago on 13 June 1983 to become the first Indian bowler to take 5 wickets for the Indian team in ODI cricket. In the World Cup 1983, this feat was done by Kapil Dev on the ground of Nottingham against Australia. Batting first, Australia scored a 320-run stand for 9 wickets in 60 overs with the help of 110 runs by Traver Chappell, 52 runs by captain Kim Hughes and 66 runs by Graham Yallap.

The bowling of Kapil Dev (5 wickets for 43 runs in 12 overs) also helped to restrict the Australian team to this score. In response, the Indian cricket team lost the match by rolling for just 158 ​​runs in 37.5 overs. In reaching this score, once again Kapil Dev became the only person who scored the highest score of 40 runs.

5 wickets were taken for India again after 5 years

How big Kapil Dev's feat was at that time, it can be gauged that it took 5 years for a bowler to take the next 5 wickets for Team India in ODI cricket. After Kapil Dev, Sanjeev Sharma became the next Indian bowler to take 5 wickets in an ODI match. This Indian fast bowler took 5 wickets for 26 runs against West Indies in Sharjah on 16 October 1988.

The interesting thing is that from October 1988 to December, 4 times Indian bowlers had taken 5 wickets in an ODI match, out of which 2 times opener batsman Krishnamachari Srikkanth in the same series with his improvised off-spin bowling. Took 5 wickets in the match against New Zealand. Srikanth took 5 wickets for 27 runs at Visakhapatnam on 10 December 1988, and on 15 December 1988, at the Indore ground, he took 5 wickets for 32 runs.

Kapil Dev holds the best bowling figures for 18 years in World Cup too

It took an Indian bowler 18 years to do the feat of taking 5 wickets in the World Cup match for India after Kapil Dev. During this time 1987, 1992 and 1996 World Cups passed like this. Kapil's record was broken by Robin Singh in the 1999 ICC World Cup on May 26, 1999, taking 5 wickets for 31 runs against Sri Lanka at the Taunton ground.

However, Singh's record was broken only 11 days later on 8 June 1999 by Venkatesh Prasad with a career-best 5 wickets for 27 against Pakistan. The record of best bowling in the World Cup for Team India is named after Ashish Nehra, who took 6 wickets for just 23 runs against England on 26 February 2003 in Durban.
