Stuart Broad's lethal bowling and top-order batsmen's superb performance helped England tighten their grip on the third and final Test cricket match against the West Indies here on Sunday. Broad took 6 wickets for 31 runs in the first innings, which led England to a 172-run lead by dismissing West Indies for 197 in the morning session on the third day. Looking at the forecast of rain on the fourth and 5th day of the match, England declared their second innings by scoring 226 runs for 2 wickets and thus aiming for 399 runs in front of the West Indies.

West Indies have scored two wickets for 10 runs till the end of the third day's play and they are still 389 runs away from the target. Broad (2 for 8) took these two wickets to take his total number of Test wickets to 499. Rory Burns (90) and Dom Sibley (56) added 114 runs for the first wicket to give England a good start in the second innings. After this, Captain Joe Root played a stormy innings of 68 not out from 56 balls. He shared a 112-run partnership for the second wicket with Burns. Burns was caught by spinner Roston Chase at the hands of Substitute wicketkeeper Joshua da Silva, soon after which Root declared the innings.





Earlier, Jason Holder took out his 100th wicket as captain by dismissing Sibley. West Indies wicketkeeper Shane Dorich was injured in an attempt to stop fast bowler Shannon Gabriel. His second innings did not start well and Broad caught John Campbell (zero) in the slip in his first over. After this, he also drove the night guard Kemar Roach (4). Craig Brathwaite was playing for two and Shai Hope for four at stumps.

Earlier, West Indies extended their first innings by 137 runs for 6 wickets. Holder (46) and Dorich (37) achieved the first goal of saving the follow-on. England started with Jofra Archer and Chris Woakes.





But things changed when Broad and James Anderson came on the attack. Broad was lbw to the holder on his third ball of the day. The Caribbean captain resorted to DRS but the on-field umpire's decision was upheld. After this, he sent Rakhim Cornwall (10) and Roach (Zero) to the pavilion in his third over. Broad took his 6 wickets, catching Dorich at the hands of Vox and ending the West Indies innings.

Broad was not included in the first Test squad at Southampton which was won by the West Indies by 4 wickets. He played an important role in England's victory by taking 3-3 wickets in both innings during the second Test at Old Trafford itself. Not only this, but he also scored 62 runs off 45 balls in the first innings of the current Test, which is his highest score since 2013 and then took 5 or more wickets in the innings for the 18th time in his career.
