The truth behind the fixing of the World Cup 2011 Allegation

Team India achieved the feat of becoming a world champion again in 2011 after 28 years. The attempt to put a black spot on this achievement after match-fixing after 9 years has raised questions. Due to the questions that had arisen for so long, it was already believed that there is something black in the pulses and the real issue is different. But now after all the developments, it is gradually becoming clear that there is nothing black in the pulses, the whole 'pulse is black' behind these allegations. The truth behind these allegations is something else, which we will tell you. First, let's have a look at the developments so far.

What happened in the world cup 2011 final

Team India and Sri Lanka had a match in the ICC World Cup final played on 2 April 2011 at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai. The Indian cricket team was considered by the experts to be a bigger contender than Sri Lanka due to the performance shown during the home ground and the World Cup reaching the final. Sri Lanka, batting first, scored 274 for 6 wickets, in which Mahela Jayawardene played a 103-run knock inning.

In response, Team India won by losing 4 wickets thanks to Gautam Gambhir's 97 runs and the then captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni's (MS Dhoni) unbeaten 91 runs. Dhoni finished the match with a tremendous six in the last over. After the thrill till the last moment of the match, no one ever raised any doubt on this victory given to Team India. The ICC's Anti-Corruption and Security Unit (ACSU) has also not raised any questions about the match till date.

Former Sri Lankan Sports Minister has now made these allegations

A few days ago, former Sri Lankan Sports Minister Mahindananda Aluthgamge had suspected in an interview to a TV channel that the final match would be fixed. Aluthgamge had said, 'Today I am telling you that we had sold the 2011 World Cup. I said this even when I was the Sports Minister. Aluthgamge, who is holding the post of Minister of State for Power in the current caretaker government, which is functioning till the elections on August 5, said, 'As a country, I did not want to make this announcement. I don't remember whether it was 2011 or 2012. But we should have won that match. In the final, Aluthgamge was also present as a special guest at the invitation of India along with the then Sri Lankan President Mahindra Rajapaksa. Although Aluthgamge also said in the interview that according to me no player was involved in it, 'some sides' were involved.

The then captain Sangakkara asked for proof

Following the allegations by the former Sports Minister, Sri Lankan team captain Kumar Sangakkara (World Cup 2011) reacted sharply to these allegations. Sangakkara challenged Aluthgamge to give evidence for an anti-corruption investigation. Sangakkara wrote in the tweet, "They need to take their evidence to the ICC and Anti-Corruption and Security Unit so that this claim can be properly investigated."

Sri Lankan Sports Ministry begins investigation, interrogates Sangakkara, Jayawardene

The Sri Lankan Sports Ministry constituted a Special Investigation Committee to investigate the entire case due to the wave of accusations and counter-accusations that followed Aluthgamge's allegations. The command of this inquiry committee was handed over to Sri Lankan Police SSP Jagat Fonsenka. Fonsenka questioned Sangakkara for about 10 hours. Apart from him, Jayawardene, the then Sri Lankan selection committee chairman and former veteran cricketer Arvinda De Silva, opened the finals with a very slow innings, Upul Tharanga and former Sri Lankan captain Arjuna Ranatunga (World Cup winner). Arjuna Ranatunga) was also questioned. Ranatunga had once expressed doubts about the loss in the final.

Investigation closed after inquiry

After questioning all the cricketers, the Sri Lankan government has announced to close the investigation. Announcing the closure of the investigation, the inquiry committee chief Jagat Fonseka said that no evidence of fixing has been found against any of the accused. He also said that after questioning the statements of the cricketers have been found to be correct and a practical reason for the change in the playing eleven for the final match has also been found. He said that the decision to stop the investigation is being made after consulting the higher officer. Explain that in the inquiry of the committee, the former Sports Minister also said that there is no evidence in his possession. He said that he had only doubts, which he wanted to get a proper investigation.

Now the real thing, why was this issue raised now?

Actually, the circumstances of Sri Lanka seem to be responsible for forcibly raising this issue after 9 years. For the last time, there have been reports in Sri Lankan newspapers of Sangakkara hitting the electoral ground on August 5. Although Sangakkara has not confirmed them, this time Sangakkara has not rejected them as of 2018. In Sri Lanka, there is the same craze about cricket as it is seen in India.

In such a situation, if Sangakkara enters the election, then his victory will be decided. Conversely, if there would have been a slight stain of fixing on his image or this issue would have been stretched till the elections, then there would have been an atmosphere in opposition to Sangakkara. Mahela Jayawardene had also indicated in his tweet that these allegations were more political than practical when Aluthgamge made the allegations. Jayawardene had tweeted, "Are elections coming? It seems that the circus (political uproar) has started. Give name and proof."

A special party has come in favor of Sangakkara

As the investigation began following Aluthgamge's allegations, an opposition group in Sri Lanka, Samagi Jana Balavegya (SJB), took command of his support, SJB youth organization Samagi Taruna Balavegya staged a demonstration outside the Sports Ministry and many other places. Demonstrations were organized in support of Sangakkara. On behalf of SJB, Prime Ministerial candidate Sajit Premdasa also supported Sangakkara on Twitter. Premadasa wrote, 'The constant harassment of Kumar Sangakkara and our other 2011 cricket heroes should stop. The behavior of the government is unbearable. ' It is believed that Sangakkara is going to contest the election from SJB. However, there is no confirmation of this yet.
